Beach Soccer is the variant of Football, also known as Soccer, played on a sand surface (beach). Teams consist of 5 players, including a goalkeeper. Beach Soccer emerged as a true sport from it's recreational roots in the early 1990's on the beaches of Los Angeles, Miami and Rio de Janeiro. The first unofficial world championships were held at Copacabana Beach in Rio in 1995. Beach Soccer is governed by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, which was founded in 1904, and Beach Soccer World Wide, which was founded in 2000.
