Fencing is a sport of systematized offense and defense with the sword. Systems of martial arts through swordmanship go back to the Greek and Roman empires, and fencing schools were known in medieval Europe. Modern fencing originated in the first Olympics in 1896. The emphasis of the sport is on winning at competitions by scoring points, and sometimes by arbitrarily ruling. Fencing consists of three different weapons: foil, epee and sabre. Contenders wear protective clothing including a mask. The Fédération Internationale d’Escrime was founded in 1913. For more info see Wikipedia.
