Field Hockey
Field Hockey, or hockey as it is called outside countries where ice hockey is played, is a sport practised around the world. In for example Pakistan and India it has a long and widespread tradition. The origins of Hockey lie on the British Isles. Hockey is played on a rectangular field with goals at each end, and a semi shooting-cirle 16 yards from the goal, over 2 x 35 minutes. Players play the ball with a stick, and are only permitted to play it with the flat side of the stick. If a defence commits a foul inside their defensive circle, an indirect penalty is given to the offensive team, called a 'penalty corner'. Heavy fouls are penalised with a direct penalty shot. The Fédération Internationale de Hockey was founded in 1924.
