In the 1980's freestyle skiing originated from its alpine skiing roots. Tricks and jumps were the base for the sport, for which special courses were constructed. There are several events: aerials (where jumps are made from a ramp), moguls (runs on bumps filled slope), halfpipe (where jumps are made on a halfpipe formed track) and ski cross (direct competition on rugged slopes). Freestyle skiing is governed by the Fédération Internationale de Ski, which was founded in 1924.
