Ice Sailing is the sport which combines Sailing with winter sports. Ice Sailing originiated in the early 1900's, but really took off when the DN iceboat design (named after the sponsor of the design contest: Detroit News) was set as the standard in 1937. A DN iceboat is about 12 feet long, has a sail area of about 60 square feet, and its number of runners is three. The IDNIYRA, the International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association, was established in 1962 to govern the sport and is an affiliated member of the International Sailing Federation, which was founded in 1907.
